Gazi Faculty of Education, which was founded in 1926, is the first educational institution for teacher training in Turkey. Gazi Faculty of Education trains teachers, administrators, inspectors, and experts for all levels of formal and informal education, with its 9 departments and 26 programmes. It's aim is producing and disseminating scientific knowledge and at being a leading institution in manipulating the national and international educational policies by incorporating its deep-rooted experience and achievements with the body of knowledge it composed by means of contemporary theories and practices. Gazi Faculty of Education provides its students with better opportunities than other educational faculties in Turkey, with its distinguished academic staff. They are eager to excell in their academic efforts with the help of the facilities and modern equipments of the faculty. The academic staff includes the following members: 58 professors, 40 associate professors, 116 assistant professors and 148 other members (instructors, research assistants, and experts), adding up to the 148 people. During the academic year of 2002-2003 11.250 students attended the classes, 2.770 of them graduated. In the academic year 2002-2003 the student population will be 11.250 in total amount again together with the new students to be enrolled. The courses are taken on a semester basis at Gazi Faculty of Education. The departments offer elective courses along with the compulsory ones. The students can be classified in two categories: Those who study as a regular student (between the hours of 08:30-17:30, and others who attend lessons in extra hours (between the hours 17:30-23:20). Instruction in the departments that graduate teachers for the secondary education last 5 years. The students take the field-related courses in the first 3.5 years and teaching profession-related courses in the remaining 1.5 year. Instruction in the other departments last 4 years. Gazi Faculty of Education is situated within the campus of Gazi University. There is a dining hall and four student canteens in the campus. Four kinds of meals are served in the dining hall for the students. Nearly 1200 students use The campus is in the centre of Ankara, and the transportation facilities such as underground, bus, minibus, train and taxi can be used to reach the city center - Kızılay and Ulus - within 15 minutes. There are theatres and cinemas in the city centre, around Kızılay. The ease in transportation enables the students to make use of these facilities. Besides these facilities, there is a cinema hall within the university, offering latest films with lower prices. In addition, there are big shopping malls such as Migros and Armada which also have cinema halls and are within easy reach from Gazi Faculty of Education. The library of Gazi University will be moved within the boundaries of Gazi Faculty of Education in 2003-2004 academic year. So students will be able to use the library and study in a comfortable atmosphere. The library also provides its users 9000 magazines via internet. In order to serve the students, there are four internet rooms which have 145 computers in the department buildings and five laboratories for students which have 126 computers in the building of Dean's Office. These computer rooms are available for the students with an appointment and can be used free of charge. Each year in May, Spring Feast is arranged within the campus of Gazi Faculty of Education. There are activities such as concerts, folk dance, drama, chess tournaments, different sports games and athletics competitions, and local Turkish food is presented on the stands in the campus. The students of the faculty can have the chance to attend all the plays and the concerts which are organized and presented by the student societies throughout the year either free of charge or with a little amount of money. Painting and sculpture exhibitions are open to all students. There are also free tours with a guide for the students to see cultural, historical, tourism and natural beauties in and around Ankara. There are also accommodation facilities for the students within the campus-two dormitories for females and also a guest house for females and males, which is as comfortable as a hotel with four stars and is regarded as a student dormitory in the first class category. Students can stay in two-person rooms with a toilette and hot water all throughout the day. Furthermore, the students will have the chance to use internet. Gazi Faculty of Education organizes graduation ceremonies as well as garden parties to share the students' graduation happiness. Gazi Faculty of Education has been one of the leading education faculties which train teachers for pre-school, primary and secondary schools.
